Why is soft bearing balancing machines the more sensitive type?
The free moving suspensions and support rollers provide a high degree of sensitivity because they do not restrain the free vibratory motion of the rotor. This provides for optimum balancing accuracy at low rotational speeds & linear response to unbalance vibration displacement throughout the balancing speed range.
| Type | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| Gravity | Low cost Simple, safe Three-dimensional balancing |
Static balance only Limited by friction |
| Soft bearing | Most sensitive type Rotor inertia absorbs energy of unbalance Not affected by nearby activity Simpler electronics High signal-to-noise ratio Low-speed balance sensitivity Can be relocated and set up elsewhere “Hand” calibration |
Requires calibration for each rotor weight Large motion when going through resonance Parasitic mass of suspension limits sensitivity |
| Hard bearing | Permanent calibration Absorbs high initial unbalance Direct readout of unbalance No phase shifting Cross-effect easy to deal with More suitable for production because of low motion |
Less sensitive Requires massive foundation Sophisticated electronics Affected by nearby activity High-speed operation dangerous Transmits vibration into floor Not suitable for moving around |
"The best spectrum analyzer in the world and the most powerful expert diagnostic software will not solve a single vibration problem. A competent person with good problem solving skills is needed to apply the data that instruments provide. Eventually, someone with toolbox must fix the vibration problem. In that toolbox must be a variety of corrective methods that match the variety of possible problems. Unbalance is the most common cause of excessive vibration and balancing tools will occupy a major portion of that toolbox " - Machinery Vibration: Balancing.
